The Space sector within the Moog Space and Defense Group is projecting significant growth driven by high levels of U.S. Department of Defense spending and the thirst for human exploration.  Additionally, the Western New York Space business has recently reorganized into three Business Units (BUs): Actuation & Avionics, Fluid Controls and Engines. We are hiring a Supplier Quality Engineer.  This Business Unit supplies valves, regulators, and other fluid control products for space applications such as in-space and launch vehicle propulsion as well as environmental control and life support systems for crewed space missions.

Supplier Quality Engineer has the responsibility to evaluate supplier performance and take action to improve the cost effectiveness and cycle times associated with supplied products. Since the procurement of parts, materials and services covers a broad spectrum of technologies, the Supplier Quality Engineer is expected to have a wide breadth of knowledge such that intelligent, cost effective decisions are made where practical and potential problems are identified early and referred to more senior technical personnel as required. The incumbent is expected to provide comprehensive inspection planning for receiving inspection, and analyses focused on reducing variation, thereby improving the cost effectiveness and cycle times for supplier quality assurance activities.

As a Supplier Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for the following:

Inspection Planning:

The Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for the creation and implementation of cost-effective quality assurance plans for procured commodities. These plans will be based upon statistical analysis, risk assessment and experience with the supplier base and will include consideration of supplier surveys, source inspections, first article inspections, standard receiving inspection plans, statistical sampling, skip lot inspection and ship to stock techniques. The Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible to resolve problems raised by receiving inspectors related to the implementation of this planning. In addition, the incumbent is expected to coordinate with Quality Engineers as required to understand source inspection requirements, and to suggest improvements to inspection plans based upon experience with the commodity and the supplier base. Through statistical analyses of supplier history, the incumbent is expected to provide a logical, documented basis for the determination of inspection parameters and to share this information with supplier and other Moog personnel as required to promote understanding of the supplier quality performance.

Supplier Evaluation:

The Supplier Quality Engineer is the primary interface with Moog suppliers for quality issues and is expected to keep the supplier informed of all activities related to supplier performance, beginning with initial and follow‑up supplier evaluation. This responsibility includes the performance of on‑site surveys, source inspection activity, supplier quality history analyses and supplier corrective action. Implementation of the systems required to collect this data and provide it to interested parties at Moog and the supplier is a part of this responsibility. The incumbent is expected to provide continuous improvement for all these activities, based upon experience, supplier performance and changes in the technology of procured items. The incumbent is also expected to maintain complete records of all activity at each supplier, including supplier rating, supplier approval, survey reports, discrepancy reports, corrective action requests and responses, and all correspondence. These records may exist as hard copies and/or computerized data bases and are the primary tools used for supplier performance evaluation.

Corrective Action:

The Supplier Quality Engineer is a member of the preliminary review board and must exercise good judgment in the disposition of discrepant material from the supplier base. This includes coordination of disposition with receiving inspection, production control, purchasing, product engineering and program quality engineering as required. The assignment of root cause and corrective action to prevent recurrence is expected as a part of preliminary review. This root cause investigation may include coordination with supplier as well as Moog personnel in areas such as drawing requirements, specifications, inspection planning, systems and procedures and supplier corrective actions.

Accountabilities:

  2. Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze supplier performance data from the MDR data base, IHS, and supplier corrective action systems to describe supplier performance to reduce appraisal and prevention costs associated with the supplier quality assurance approach for selected commodities, suppliers and/or individual items.
